Great Minds… Don’t Think Alike
Great Minds Think Alike
A phrase we’ve all grown up hearing. But looking back, I think it might be one of the sneakiest killers of creativity.
What it should say is: Great minds… thrive in diversity of thought.
We live in a world that’s scared of conflict. We’re conditioned to avoid disagreement, to shy away from standing out, and to fit ourselves into molds that don’t always fit. In the process, we lose the spark that comes from divergent thinking—the ideas that challenge, push, and inspire.
True creativity isn’t about agreeing for the sake of comfort. It’s about leaning into difference, asking hard questions, and having the courage to explore perspectives that don’t match our own. Because when great minds differ… that’s where the magic happens.
I remember this past semester, I was working on a creative campaign with my team. A few weeks into developing a concept, I realized I didn’t fully love it—not because I disliked it, but because I knew it wasn’t our best effort. Still, I found myself hesitating to speak up. If I hadn’t, this hesitation could have meant settling for something good instead of making something great.
One day after class, I briefly shared another idea I had brainstormed over the weekend. My teammates asked questions, embraced curiosity, and together we drew on our diverse perspectives to create work that truly resonated.
This experience reminded me that creativity isn’t just about having ideas—it’s about having the courage to share them, the humility to listen, and the curiosity to explore what others bring to the table.
Great minds don’t just think alike—they challenge, inspire, and elevate one another. And when we lean into that diversity of thought, that’s when our best work—and our most meaningful growth—happens.
